The Values of a New BASC Corporate Culture

Luis Carlos Riviere Mejía
Administrative and Financial Manager
COORDICARGAS

Since 1918, our organization has been a leader in Colombia in the development of the cargo transportation sector. Despite all the difficulties and inconveniences that we have faced throughout the years, we are known for offering excellent service to our customers, for maintaining high levels of efficiency and at the same time, for being leaders in the development of the international transportation sector. Currently, we have offices in four countries, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela and we also offer our services of Multimodal Transport Operators in the rest of the world.

I want to point out some of the important achievements we have obtained by implementing the BASC program.

  1. We have communicated to our personnel the risks and dangers of illicit activities and their effect on society, families and companies.
  2. The new BASC standards forced us to improve our technology on the control of vehicles and cargo. This meant better service to our customers.
  3. The control of documents required by BASC provided our company with better security and trust in our operations. The requirements in terms of the numbering, filing and control of documents overcame this weakness, which is a characteristic of excessive trust.
  4. The need to meet the legal, technological and personnel aspects of the BASC standards allowed us to develop a better organizational environment with our employees.
  5. We achieved higher levels of productivity and efficiency as we organized our employees according to their profiles. The results of an evaluation of our human resource were higher than ever before: Creativity 4.34, Integral Communication 4.33, Self Control 4.28, and Sensibility for Other Persons 4.24. There is also a high level of commitment from part of our employees to follow the security policies implemented by the BASC program.
  6. We require our clients to demonstrate their commitment and seriousness in their controls.

In conclusion, our organization has implemented all the opportunities offered by BASC and has established success standards with employees, customers, suppliers, shareholders and society. We have also instilled fundamental ethical values such as honesty, seriousness, justice, solidarity, respect, quality, loyalty, responsibility, honoring commitments, and organizational principles such as respect and consideration for the dignity of every human being, quality and continuous improvement, good faith relations, considering the future of the company and social responsibility.

Before BASC After BASC
Employees carried out their functions and duties. Our employees want to improve every day and they feel part of the BASC self-assessment program.
The performance from part of the employees was acceptable. After modifying the functions of the employees we had greater productivity and efficiency.
Although document files did exist, these were not a priority. The management of clients’ files and cargo is an important component of our organization.
There was a control in our transportation routes that made us recognize efficiency. We found opportunities for improvement including control in real time in transportation.
Our operations were dependant on trust. Our operations are trustful, precise and “just in time” and control is done in real time.
We had very good clients. We have been able to select clients, who in addition to being very good clients are also trustful, profitable and who are very satisfied with our services.
The control of the transportation route was done by telephone and fax. Currently, the control in transportation routes is done through internet in real time, using GPS technology.
